Rick Telander of the Chicago Sun-Times writes that there’s anย “outside chance” that Lovie Smith could be fired following the team’s “late-season meltdown.”
Telander adds that such a move would cost the Bears $5 million, but the fact that Chicago has dropped four of their last five games since starting off 7 and 1, makes it seem like an actual possibility.
Tom Waddle of the NFL Network seemed to agree that Lovie could be shown the door in the near future if the Bears season continues to head south.
โI think heโs on the hot seat now,โ Waddle said, viaย Pro Football Talk. โItโs a bottom line business, and as of right now theyโve missed the postseason four of the last five years. If they make it five out of six, theyโve got a new general manager in place who has the autonomy to make the decision on the coaching position. I think in fact if they donโt get to the postseason, itโs very likely you will see a coaching change. And if they limp to the postseason and one and done, I still think itโs a possibility that Phil Emery, the new G.M., will make a change.โ
