Bears Reportedly Inquiring About Trade For Jaguars QB Nick Foles Or Bengals QB Andy Dalton

Update: According to Dan Wiederer, not only are the Bears inquiring about Jaguars QB Nick Foles, but Chicago has also reached out tot he Bengals to discuss a potential deal for QB Andy Dalton.

Dalton is available for trade and has been linked repeatedly to the Bears given the presence of former OC Bill Lazor on staff.

According to Michael Lombardi, the Bears are trying to get involved with the Jaguars in a trade for QB Nick Foles.

Foles would present a veteran alternative to Bears QB Mitchell Trubisky, either as a starter or mentor. Foles also overlapped with Bears HC Matt Nagy with the Chiefs.

Jacksonville would also presumably be interested in shedding Foles’ salary given the surprise success of sixth-round 2019 rookie QB Gardner Minshew. The Jaguars are reportedly not shopping Foles yet, but given their trade activity so far this offseason it’s reasonable to think they would move him for the right offer.

Jacksonville brought Foles in to be their starter last year. However, a broken left clavicle during his debut in Week 1 and was placed on injured reserve. Minshew stepped in and performed well in Foles’ absence.

The Jaguars gave Foles another shot later on in the year, but still finished out the season with Minshew as their starter.

Foles, 31, is a former third-round pick of the Eagles back in 2012. Philadelphia traded Foles to the Rams back in 2015 in a deal for QB Sam Bradford and he later signed an extension with the team.

Foles lasted just over a year with the Rams before he was released and later signed on with the Chiefs. After a year in Kansas City, Foles agreed to a two-year, $11 million contract with the Eagles.

From there, Foles signed a four-year, $88 million contract with the Jaguars that included $50.125 million guaranteed. He stands to make a base salary of $15,125,000 for the 2020 season.

According to OverTheCap.com, trading Foles would free up $3,087,500 of available cap space while creating $18,750,000 in dead money.

In 2019, Foles appeared in four games for the Jaguars and completed 65.8 percent of his passes for 736 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.

Dalton, 32, is a former second-round pick of the Bengals back in 2011. He’s currently entering the final year of his seven-year, $97.09 million contract, which includes $17 million guaranteed.

Dalton stands to make a base salary of $17.5 million in 2020.

In 2019, Dalton appeared in 13 games for the Bengals and threw for 3,494 yards while completing 59.5 percent of his passes to go along with 16 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 27 receiver out of 37 qualifying players.
