Dan Pompei of the Chicago Tribune would be “stunned” if the the Bears were starting second-round pick WR Alshon Jeffery over WR Devin Hesterย for week one of the upcoming season.
Pompei notes that out of twenty-eight wideย receiversย taken last year and two wound upย starting in week one. The two that started (A.J. Greenย and Julio Jones) were both top-six picks in last year’s draft. Pompei adds thatย just “five rookies made more than four starts” in 2011.ย
Chicago traded up for the South Carolina receiver, but Pompei sees him an unfinished product that needs more time to develop. Jeffrey may not get the start in week one, but it’s hard to completely rule out anything at this point in time. Hester hasย under-performedย when given theย opportunityย to be a significantย contributorย in the past, soย Jeffrey will eventually get his shot.

While Jeffery may not ‘start’ week one, it will certainly be Earl Bennett playing oppo Marshall with Hester, Devin Thomas or even Eric Weems in the slot… Jeffery will likely be used in at the very least red zone snaps…
