Dan Pompei of the Chicago Tribune would be โstunnedโ if the the Bears were starting second-round pick WR Alshon Jeffery over WR Devin Hester for week one of the upcoming season.
Pompei notes that out of twenty-eight wide receivers taken last year and two wound up starting in week one. The two that started (A.J. Green and Julio Jones) were both top-six picks in last yearโs draft. Pompei adds that just โfive rookies made more than four startsโ in 2011.
Chicago traded up for the South Carolina receiver, but Pompei sees him an unfinished product that needs more time to develop. Jeffrey may not get the start in week one, but itโs hard to completely rule out anything at this point in time. Hester has under-performed when given the opportunity to be a significant contributor in the past, so Jeffrey will eventually get his shot.
