Seahawks LB Bobby Wagner said he and the team have yet to start negotiations toward a new contract but still hopes to retire with Seattle.
“I want to retire a Seahawk, but I understand it’s a business,” said Wagner, via Omar Ruiz.
Wagner added that he is “preparing” like 2019 will be his last season with the Seahawks.
“Iโm preparing like this is my last year as a Seahawk. If it is, I want to make sure I go out with a bang and make sure I give the city something to remember,โ said Wagner, via Ruiz.
The last we heard, Seahawks GM John Schneider called the prospect of trying to keep Frank Clark, Wagner, and Jarran Reed together “feasible but very challenging.” Although they’ve traded Clark, it still remains unclear if they will be able to extend Wagner, who is considered among the best inside linebackers in the NFL.
Wagner, 28, is a former second-round pick by the Seahawks out of Utah State in the 2012 NFL Draft. He is entering the final year of his four-year, $43 million deal and set to earn a base salary of $10.5 million in 2019.
In 2018, Wagner appeared in 15 games for the Seahawks and recorded 138 total tackles, six tackles for loss, one sack, one interception, two forced fumble, one fumble recovery, 11 pass defenses, and scored one defensive touchdown. Pro Football Focus graded him as the No. 1 linebacker out of 92 qualifying players.
