John Keim of ESPN confirms that Washington and franchise G Brandon Scherff will wait until after the 2020 season to try to get a long-term extension in place.
The two parties technically have until Wednesday to negotiate, but reports have said for over a week now that it was unlikely they reach an agreement with Scherff.
Keim did say last week that Washington has expressed a desire to keep Scherff long term as part of their core.
Scherff is set to play out the 2020 season under the franchise tag total of $15.03 million.
Back in April, Scherff said he’s hoping to sign a long-term extension that will ensure he’ll remain in Washington for the duration of his NFL career.
“It’s gone well,” Scherff said of the contractual process. “Just pretty much sat down and talked to my agent — that’s what he’s there for — and I want to sign a long-term deal with them, too. I love it there, and I’ve always said I wanted to be a Redskin for the rest of my career. So, hopefully we can work towards that.”
“I’m excited,” Scherff added. “I’m still living out this dream, and I’m just glad I’m back with the Redskins again.”
Scherff, 28, is a former No. 5 overall pick by Washington out of Iowa in the 2015 NFL Draft. He signed a four-year, $21.215 million fully guaranteed rookie contract and is playing out the fifth-year option on that deal.
Washington picked up Scherff’s option in 2018 and paid him $12,525,000 for the 2019 season. Scherff is in line to be an unrestricted free agent in 2021.
In 2019, Scherff started 11 games for Washington before landing on injured reserve. He was rated by Pro Football Focus as the No. 10 guard out of 80 qualifying players.
