Bengals Release LB Vontaze Burfict

Update:

The Cincinnati Bengals announced Monday that they’ve officially released veteran LB Vontaze Burfict

“As we continue to build our roster for the 2019 season, we felt it best to give both the team and Vontaze a fresh start,” said Bengals head coach Zac Taylor. “Vontaze has been a good player here — the team appreciates that, and I know a lot of fans appreciate that — but our focus is on the future. Our goal is to build a successful team for the upcoming season, and we felt that making this change now was best for everyone.”

Dianna Russini reports that the Bengals have released LB Vontaze Burfict on Monday.

A report from last year mentioned that Burfict’s career could be in jeopardy after he suffered a seventh known concussion.

Burfict returned to the Bengals in December after missing two games with a prior concussion only to suffer another, which led to him missing the remainder of the season.

Burfict, 28, wound up signing on with the Bengals as an undrafted free agent out of Arizona State back in 2012. He was in the final year of his four-year, $20 million contract when the Bengals signed him to a three-year $38.68M extension last year.

Burfict was set to make base salaries of $5 million (2019), and $6.18 million (2020) over the remainder of the contract.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Burfict will free up $5,532,721 of available cap space while creating $1,806,250 in dead money.

In 2018, Burfict appeared in seven games for the Bengals and recorded 33 tackles, no sacks and three pass defenses.
