- Pro Football Talk, citing multiple sources, reports that the Jaguars have not informed Marrone that he will be fired after Sunday’s game. However, PFT admits that Jacksonville could still fire Marrone, but they haven’t informed him of their decision yet.
- Tom Pelissero reports that Marrone had dinner Thursday night with owner Shad Khan and senior VP Tony Khan and no decision has been made regarding his future.
- According to Pelissero, it sounds as if there’s a “real chance” Marrone stays.
Dianna Russini reports that the Jaguars have informed HC Doug Marrone that he will be fired from his position following Week 17’s game against the Colts.
A report from last week mentioned that Marrone had a “good chance” of retaining his position after the team parted ways with EVP Tom Coughlin. However, it appears Jacksonville’s ownership is electing to go in a different direction.
It remains to be seen whether GM Dave Caldwell will survive, considering that the Jaguars will have parted ways with two notable figures.
Marrone, 55, was hired by the Bills as their head coach back in 2013 after he had spent a number of years with at Syracuse. After two seasons in Buffalo, Marrone surprising voided his contract with the team to become a free agent.
The thinking at the time was that Marrone was going to be hired by the Jets. However, he didn’t secure another head-coaching job and eventually ended up on the Jaguars’ coaching staff as an assistant.
The Jaguars promoted him to interim head coach after they parted ways with Gus Bradley in 2016 and he’s remained in the position since then.
As the Jaguars’ head coach, Marrone has compiled a 21-28 record (44.4 percent), which includes one playoff appearance and a trip to the AFC Championship game.
