Jets Trading QB Teddy Bridgewater To Saints

Adam Schefter reports that the Jets are trading QB Teddy Bridgewater to the Saints on Wednesday.

  • According to Schefter, the Jets trade Bridgewater and a 2019 sixth-round pick to New Orleans for a 2019 third-round pick.
  • Tom Pelissero reports that the Jets players were on the bus Wednesday when they stopped and informed Bridgewater that he was being traded. Pelissero says that Bridgewater waved goodbye and the team departed.

Bridgewater had been mentioned for weeks now as a possible trade candidate before the start of the season and it looks like the Saints stepped up to get him.

New Orleans had Tom Savage and Taysom Hill behind Drew Brees, so they were clearly concerned about their depth heading into the regular season.

It will be interesting to see how the Saints handle Bridgewater, given that he’s in line to be an unrestricted free agent next year. Bridgewater could very well be the heir apparent to Brees.

As for the Jets, this likely ensures that Sam Darnold opens the season as their starting quarterback with Josh McCown operating as their backup.

Bridgewater has worked his way back from a devasting knee injury he suffered a few years ago and has looked pretty good during the preseason.

Bridgewater, 25, is a former first-round pick of the Vikings back in 2014. He played out the final year of his four-year, $6,849,502 rookie contract after Minnesota declined to pick up his fifth-year option.

This offseason, Bridgewater signed a one-year, $6 million contract with the Jets that includes just $500,000 guaranteed.

In 2017, Bridgewater appeared in one game for the Vikings and was 0-2 passing and threw an interception.

We have him featured in our Top 25 – 2019 NFL Free Agents list.
