Browns Claim CB Phillip Gaines & S Jermaine Whitehead

Adam Schefter reports that the Browns claimed CB Phillip Gaines and S Jermaine Whitehead off of waivers on Wednesday from the Bills and Packers respectively.

Other roster moves for the Browns on Wednesday include:

  • Browns placed LB Christian Kirksey and DB E.J. Gaines on injured reserve. (NFLTR)
  • Browns signed DB Juston Burris off of the Jets’ practice squad.
  • Browns waived CB Denzel Rice.
  • Browns signed DB Arrion Springs to their practice squad.
  • Browns released OL Jake Eldrenkamp from their practice squad.

Gaines, 27, is a former third-round pick of the Chiefs back in 2014. He played out the final year of his four-year, $2,824,112 contract and made a base salary of $700,000 before signing on with the Bills this past March.

In 2018, Gaines has appeared in seven games for the Bills and recorded 30 tackles, no interceptions and two pass defenses.

Whitehead, 25, wound up signing on with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent out of Auburn back in May of 2015. He was unfortunately among their final roster cuts coming out of the preseason before later signing to the 49ers’ practice squad.

After a brief stint with the Ravens, Whitehead signed on with the Packers before being waived on Tuesday.

In 2018, Whitehead has appeared in seven games for the Packers and recorded 20 tackles, one sack, no interceptions and two pass defenses.
