Ian Rapoport of NFL Mediaย reportedย on Monday’s NFL Total Access. that the Chargers are hoping to have a long-termย dealย in place with QB Philip Rivers before the start of training camp.
- Rapoport added that he expects theย Chargers to make a “big push” to Rivers to an extensionย before camp is underway.
This comes afterย Michael Gehlken of the Union-Tribune San Diegoย recently reported that thereย has been “little urgency” from Riversย and his camp in recent months to get a long-term extension in place with the Chargers.
There really hasn’t been much buzz regarding contract talks between the two parties in the past few months.
All indications are that Rivers intends to play out the final year of his current agreement and see where things stand at that point in time.
Rivers said previouslyย that he wasย “willing to listen to anything” in regards to possibly signing a contract extension that will keep him in San Diego.
โA lot of moving parts and lots to think about,โ Rivers said, via Kevin Acee of the Union-Tribune. โLocation, family, team โฆ All I can say at this point regarding an extension is Iโm willing to listen to anything. Iโm also willing to play it out. Iโm just fired up to be the Chargers QB in 2015.โ
Rivers, 33, isย entering the final year of his seven-year, $98.25 million contractย that includedย $38.15 million guaranteed. He stands to make aย base salary ofย $15.57 million for the 2015 season.
Despite dealing with some injuries lastย ย year, Rivers was able to put together another solid season for the Chargers in which he threw forย 4,286 yards while completingย 66.5 percent of his passes to go along withย 31 touchdowns and 18 interceptions.
Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 7 quarterback out of 39 qualifying players.
