Chargers HC Anthony Lynn said Tuesday at the Scouting Combine that they would like to see the team re-sign RB Melvin Gordon this offseason.
โI do believe that,โ Lynn told Pro Football Talk. โWe love Melvin. Heโs outstanding. He held out last year, that hurt us a little bit, but when he came back his attitude and the way he fit right back into the locker room was typical Melvin. Weโd like to have him back, but itโs free agency and you never know whatโs going to happen.โ
Gordon is in position to test the free agent market for the first time in his NFL career after he was unable to reach an agreement with Los Angeles on an extension last year.
A few weeks ago, Gordon said on Pro Football Talk Live that he’s still hoping he’ll be back with the Chargers this season.
โHopefully, Iโm here,โ Gordon said. โHopefully, I donโt have to wait til March to know where Iโm gonna be playing.โ
Gordon did, however, admit that it’s a business and it remains to be seen whether a deal with the Chargers will come together this offseason.
โWhen it comes to business, you have to take your emotions out of it,โ Gordon said. โItโs not about if you deserve to be here or not. Iโve talked to Tom plenty of times, he tells me โyou deserve to get paidโ but sometimes it just might not be the right situation.โ
It will be interesting to see what kind of market develops for Gordon this offseason. He’s one of the best available running backs, but is coming off of a down year in which he held out for the first four games of the season.
Gordon, 26, is a former first-round pick out of Wisconsin by the Chargers in the 2015 NFL Draft. He signed a four-year $10.669 million rookie contract that was fully guaranteed and made a base salary of $1,889,967 for the 2018 season.
The Chargers picked up Gordon’s fifth-year option this past May worth $5,605,000 for the 2019 season. He’s in line to be an unrestricted free agent in 2020.
In 2019, Gordon appeared in 12 games for the Chargers and rushed for 612 yards on 162 carries (3.8 YPC) to go along with 42 receptions for 296 yards receiving and nine total touchdowns.
We have him included in our Top 100 – 2020 Free Agents list.
