Kevin Acee of the Union-Tribune San Diego reports that the Chargers are working on a new contract for RB Mike Tolbert and mentions that they’ve reached a “critical stage.”
By this, Acee means that the team is ready for an answer from Tolbert and his representation before moving on to other free agents like Jackie Battle.
Tolbert was a great weapon for the Chargers the last few season but Ryan Mathews has played well enough to give them some leverage in the negotiations. The Buccaneers were reportedly interested in signing him at the start of free agency so he has other options available should he choose to move on.
