Clay Matthews Filing Grievance Against Rams For $2M Of Unpaid Earnings

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports that free agent OLB Clay Matthews is filing a grievance over $2 million in unpaid guarantees from the Rams.

According to Fowler, Matthews has submitted paperwork with the NFLPA, which will handle his filing.

Matthews and Todd Gurley have both expressed frustrations about non-payments from the Rams.

In an interview on NFL Network, Rams GM Les Snead was asked about the claims made by Matthews and Gurley regarding the unpaid earnings.

“They’re definitely owed money. That money is guaranteed, we’re going to pay them. There’s some language in the contract of exactly when you pay them and that’s what we’re adhering by. What I do know is both Clay and Todd earned that money and they’re going to get that money,” Snead said.

Matthews, 33, is a former first-round pick of the Packers back in 2009. He played out the final year of his six-year, $69.73 million contract and made a base salary of $10.4 million for the 2018 season.

The Rams signed Matthews to a two-year contract worth up to $16.75 million last year. However, Los Angeles opted to release him last month.

In 2019, Matthews appeared in 13 games for the Rams and recorded 37 tackles, eight sacks, two forced fumbles and three pass defenses.
