According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, the Cowboys have met with S Earl Thomas‘ representatives at the Combine and he’s “clearly their top target at safety”
However, La Canfora says that Dallas plans to cast a wide net at that the safety position if they cannot agree to a deal with Thomas in free agency.
Teams aren’t technically allowed to discuss potential free agent signings at the Combine but tampering is widespread this time of the year, so this isn’t much of a surprise.
Thomas has made it clear that he would like to play for the Cowboys and there’s an obvious fit here, considering they could use some help at safety.
The Seahawks mentioned this week that they will allow Thomas to test the open market and Richard Sherman floated the possibility of him signing with the 49ers if things don’t work out with the Cowboys.
It’s worth mentioning that Thomas is coming off of a season-ending leg fracture.
Thomas, 29, is a former first-round pick of the Seahawks back in 2010. He played out the final year of his five-year, $44.725 million contract that includes $27.725 million guaranteed and made a base salary of $8.5 million for the 2018 season.
Thomas will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
In 2018, Thomas appeared in four games and recorded 22 tackles, three interceptions and five pass defense for the Seahawks.
