Andrew Marchand of the New York Post reports that ESPN is attempting to hire current Saints QB Drew Brees for their โMonday Night Footballโ booth after he retires. Although, NBC and FOX are reportedly showing “strong interest” in Brees as well.
The Saints signed Brees to a two-year, $50 million contract this offseason, but it’s possible that he may play just one more season before retiring.
ESPN is reportedly offering Brees around $6.5 million per year, which would be similar compensation to what Jon Gruden was making in his final seasons with ESPN. As of now, Marchand says ESPN is the current highest bidder for Brees.
Before Tony Romo agreed to return to CBS for a record contract, ESPN was prepared to offer him $14 million per season. ESPN also showed interest in Peyton Manning and Philip Rivers this offseason.
The “Monday Night Football” booth has a popular topic in recent months and Marchand says the network is currently considering Steve Levy, Louis Riddick and Dan Orlovsky for the 2020 season. However, they’ve yet to officially confirm any plans to replace their current Monday Night team of Joe Tessitore and Booger McFarland.
Another option for ESPN, according to the Post, is promoting their college team of Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit back, but ESPN is reportedly wary of creating a problem with its national championship duo.
Brees, 41, is a former second-round pick of the Chargers back in 2001. After five years with the Chargers, Brees signed on with the Saints as a free agent in 2006.
Brees has spent the past 12 seasons in New Orleans. He agreed to a new two-year, $50 million contract with the Saints this past March.
In 2019, Brees appeared in 11 games for the Saints and completed 74.3 percent of his passes for 2,979 yards, 27 touchdowns and four interceptions.
Weโll have more regarding Brees and ESPN as the news is available.
