According to Mike Garafolo, the Falcons are signing QB Matt Simms to their training camp roster.
Garafolo mentions that Falcons QB Kurt Benkert suffered a toe injury and was “pushing” Matt Schaub for the backup role, meaning Simms will likely take Benkert’s spot going forward.
Simms, 30, originally signed on with the Jets as an undrafted out of Tennessee back in 2012. He spent just over three years with the Jets before he was waived and later claimed off of waivers by the Bills.
Simms was among Buffalo’s final roster cuts at the start of the 2015 season and later signed on to the Falcons’ practice squad and returned to Atlanta on a futures deal before he was waived in September of 2016.
The Falcons did, however, re-sign him to their practice squad. Simms returned to Atlanta’s active roster but was waived with an injury designation and later placed on injured reserve in September of 2017. Atlanta waived Simms with an injury settlement before the start of the season.
In 2014, Simms appeared in one game for the Falcons, completing 3-of-8 pass attempts for 39 yards.
