According to Ian Rapoport, the Giants have spent a lot of time researching Oregon QB Justin Herbert, including a video interview with new Giants HC Joe Judge.
It would qualify as a massive shock if New York was actually considering drafting Herbert given the Giants took QB Daniel Jones sixth-overall last year.
What’s more likely is the Giants are simply doing due diligence on Herbert. Interviewing Herbert can help if another team tries to trade up to their pick for him, or if the Giants have a chance at acquiring Herbert later on down the road.
However, it is worth mentioning Gettleman praised Herbert last year before he returned for his senior season and Judge did not have a say in drafting Jones.
Herbert, 21, was considered to be one of the top quarterback prospects in the 2019 draft before he surprisingly decided to return for his senior season despite being a potential top-five pick.
After an uneven senior season, Herbert impressed scouts at the Senior Bowl and helped boost his stock back up. He’s now seen as a first-round prospect.
NFL Media’s Lance Zierlein compares Herbert to Eagles QB Carson Wentz in his scouting report.
During his four-year college career at Oregon, Herbert threw for 10,541 yards while completing 64 percent of his passes to go along with 95 touchdowns and 23 interceptions. He also rushed for 560 yards and 13 touchdowns.
