Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Jaguars QB Gardner Minshew is in danger of being benched if he continues to struggle and a move could happen as soon as today against the Chargers.
Rapoport says Mike Glennon could replace him on Sunday unless he improves his play. From there, the Jaguars will likely use their bye week to re-evaluate their quarterback situation.
Jacksonville also has rookie QB Jake Luton, who Rapoport says could eventually factor into the decision as well.
The Jaguars are currently on a five-game losing streak in which Minshew has produced five interceptions and four fumbles to go along with 1,682 yards and 11 touchdowns while completing 67.5 percent of his passes. Rapoport notes that most of this production has come with the team trailing.
Minshew was viewed as a potential long-term solution at quarterback coming into the season. However, the team is positioned to have a high draft pick next year, so unless they’re able to turn things around, there’s a good chance Jacksonville will be evaluating some of the top prospects in next year’s draft class.
Minshew, 24, is a former sixth-round pick of the Jaguars out of Washington State back in 2019. He signed a four-year rookie deal worth $2.7 million and will make a base salary of 585,000 for the 2020 season.
In 2020, Minshew has appeared in six games for the Jaguars and completed 67.5 percent of his passes for 1,682 yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions. He has also rushed for 101 yards and a touchdown.
