Jaguars Retaining HC Doug Marrone & GM Dave Caldwell

According to Mark Long, the Jaguars will be retaining HC Doug Marrone and GM Dave Caldwell in 2020.

Jaguars owner Shad Khan released a statement, saying in part:

While our discussions will remain confidential, the decision I am making to keep our staff intact for 2020 has nothing to do with our victory on Sunday and everything to do with my positive meetings with Dave, Doug, the coordinators and our players, as well as my belief that this is not the time to consider an overhaul of our organization.

The 2019 season was unacceptable and Iโ€™ve made my dissatisfaction clear. While many unusual circumstances influenced our season, none can fully explain or defend our second-half collapse with first place in the division within reach on Week 9. At the same time, there were positive developments and contributions that should not be overlooked.

The move means Jacksonville is hoping that the firing of EVP Tom Coughlin will be enough of a shakeup to get the team back on track. Jacksonville will not be filling the EVP position.

This announcement puts to rest any speculation that Jacksonville would fire Marrone โ€” at least until 2020.

Marrone, 55, was hired by the Bills as their head coach back in 2013 after he had spent a number of years with at Syracuse. After two seasons in Buffalo, Marrone surprising voided his contract with the team to become a free agent.

The thinking at the time was that Marrone was going to be hired by the Jets. However, he didn’t secure another head-coaching job and eventually ended up on the Jaguars’ coaching staff as an assistant.

The Jaguars promoted him to interim head coach after they parted ways with Gus Bradley in 2016 and he’s remained in the position since then.

As the Jaguars’ head coach, Marrone has compiled a 22-28 record (44 percent), which includes one playoff appearance and a trip to the AFC Championship game.
