Jets Place WR Rishard Matthews On IR, Sign OT Eric Smith Off Patriots’ PS

The New York Jets announced Tuesday that they’ve placed WR Rishard Matthews on injured reserve and signed T Eric Smith off of the Patriots’ practice squad.

Matthews, 28, is a former seventh-round pick of the Dolphins back in 2012. He spent four years in Miami before signing a three-year, $15 million contract with the Titans in 2016.

Matthews was set to make a base salary of $5 million for the 2018 season when he agreed to a new one-year extension last month worth a base value of $7.75M for the 2019 season. The Titans elected to cut him loose shortly after he requested his release from the team.

Matthews later caught on with the Jets.

In 2018, Matthews appeared in eight games and caught five passes for 24 yards receiving and no touchdowns for the Jets and Titans.
