Jets’ veteran impending free-agent QB Josh McCown indicated to reporters on Tuesday that he wants to continue his NFL career and would like to return to New York next season.
“Right now, that’s how it’s looking,” McCown said regarding continuing his career, via Connor Hughes of NJ Advance Media. “At this time of the year, I go through those conversations with my family, talk with them through that, pray through that.”
McCown added that he is looking forward to what transpires within the next few months and will be “ready to go” for 2018.
“But where we’re at right now, I feel like I want to play … I’m looking forward to the next few months, seeing what happens, and I’ll be ready to go,” said McCown.
Jets HC Todd Bowles said a few weeks ago that the Jets are interested in re-signing McCown. However, the two sides were reported to beย “far”ย from getting a deal done. (NFLTR)
“Josh had a great year,” Bowles said. “It would be great to have him back. It’s business in this league. He has decisions to make, we have decisions to make. Hopefully, they can meet and we’ll go from there.”
McCown’s 2017 season ended after he suffered a season-ending hand fracture that led to him being placed on injured reserve.
According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, “multiple GMs” believe McCown could command as much asย $10 million or more next year, so it will be interesting to see if the Jets can reach his demands.
McCown, 38, is a former third-round pick of the Cardinals back in 2002. He played for several teams including the Lions, Raiders, Dolphins, Panthers, 49ers, Bears, Buccaneers and Browns before signing a one-year, $6 million contract with the Jets as an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
In 2017, McCown appeared in 12 games for the Jets and thrown for 2,880 yards while completing 67.8 percent of his passes to go along with 18 touchdowns and eight interceptions.ย Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 23 quarterback out of 40 qualifying players.
We’ll have more regarding McCown and the Jets as the news is available.
