NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero says he spoke with a source close to Seahawks LB Bobby Wagner who told him there’s no inclination on Wagner’s part to give Seattle a hometown discount.
“There’s no bargain with Bobby,” Pelissero quoted the source as saying.
Pelissero says Wagner is a “priority” for the Seahawks, but contract talks have not started as of a few days ago. Wagner has said he’s preparing as if 2019 is his last in Seattle.
“Iโm preparing like this is my last year as a Seahawk. If it is, I want to make sure I go out with a bang and make sure I give the city something to remember,โ said Wagner, via Omar Ruiz.
If the Seahawks can’t agree on an extension with Wagner, it’s believed they are unlikely to use the franchise tag on him because of the $15 million it would cost.
Wagner is likely looking to top the contract signed by Jets LB C.J. Mosley this offseason. Per Over The Cap, Mosley signed a five year, $85 million contract with $43 million fully guaranteed at signing and $51 million in overall guarantees.
Wagner, 28, is a former second-round pick by the Seahawks out of Utah State in the 2012 NFL Draft. He is entering the final year of his four-year, $43 million deal and set to earn a base salary of $10.5 million in 2019.
In 2018, Wagner appeared in 15 games for the Seahawks and recorded 138 total tackles, six tackles for loss, one sack, one interception, two forced fumble, one fumble recovery, 11 pass defenses, and scored one defensive touchdown. Pro Football Focus graded him as the No. 1 linebacker out of 92 qualifying players.
