According to Aaron Wilson, the Detroit Lions brought in six free agents for workouts on Tuesday, including DL Zach Kerr and DT Mike Pennel.
The full list of tryouts includes:
- DL Joel Heath
- C Russell Bodine
- C Tyler Gauthier
- DL Frank Herron
- DL Zach Kerr
- DT Mike Pennel
Kerr, 28, wound up signing on with the Colts as an undrafted free agent out of Delaware back in 2014. He managed to make the 53-man roster in all three of seasons with the Colts.
However, Indianapolis declined to tender him a restricted offer, which allowed him to test the open market as an unrestricted free agent in 2017. The Broncos later signed him to a two-year contract this offseason but was among their final roster cuts.
In 2018, Kerr appeared in all 16 games for the Broncos and recorded 33 tackles, 1.5 sacks and a pass defense. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 73 interior defensive lineman out of 112 qualifying players.
Pennel, 28, wound up signing on with the Packers as an undrafted free agent out of Colorado State-Pueblo back in 2014. He was waived towards the end of 2016 and was later claimed off of waivers by the Jets.
The Jets re-signed Pennel to a three-year contract worth up to $12 million in 2018 but New York declined his team-option after one season. He signed on with the Patriots back in March but was cut loose in late August.
Since becoming a free agent, Pennel worked out for the Colts earlier this month but left Indianapolis without a contract.
In 2018, Pennel appeared in all 16 games for the Jets and recorded 27 tackles, no sacks an a pass defense.
