Hadley Engelhard,ย the agent for Redskins RB Matt Jones, tells the Associated Press he “asked very politely” for Washington to release his client simply because “he has no future there.”
“Let’s move on,” Engelhard said. “We’re hoping Bruce [Allen] sees the light and does the gentleman thing and release Matt.”
“He’s a healthy scratch,” Engelhard added. “All the writing’s on the wall that he’s going to be released. Is Bruce waiting for a team to have a devastating injury that’s in dire straits to make a trade? I guess you can do that. But you’re messing with someone’s mind, for lack of a better term.”
Jones reported to the team’sย mandatory minicamp this week, despiteย skipping voluntary offseason workouts.
Mike Silver of NFL Mediaย previously reported thatย the Redskins informed Jones that he’s their No. 5 running back, which is why he has elected to skip OTAs.
Washington plans to move forward with Rob Kelley and fourth-round pick Samaje Perine, which means Jones is the odd-man-out in the Redskins’ backfield.
Jones, 24, is a former third-round pick of the Redskins back in 2015. He’s currently in the third year of his four-year, $2.952 million contract and stands to make a base salaryย of $639,113ย in 2017.
According to OverTheCap.com, trading Jones would free up $489,146 in available cap space while creating $299,708 in dead money.
In 2016, Jones has appeared in seven games and rushed for 490 yards on 144 carries (3.4 YPC) to go along with 19 receptions for 304 yards receiving and four total touchdowns.
We’ll have more regarding Jones and the Redskins as the news is available.
