Melvin Gordon Expected To Test Free Agency

According to Josina Anderson, Chargers RB Melvin Gordon is expected to test free agency in the coming weeks.

This doesn’t come as a big surprise, as Gordon held out for a new deal for four games this past season.

It will be interesting to see what kind of market develops for Gordon this offseason. He’s one of the best available running backs, but is coming off of a down year and facing challenging contract dynamics because of his position.

Both the Chargers and Gordon have said they want to stay together. It remains to be seen if that will work out in the shape of a new deal in 2020, however.

Gordon, 26, is a former first-round pick out of Wisconsin by the Chargers in the 2015 NFL Draft. He signed a four-year $10.669 million rookie contract that was fully guaranteed and made a base salary of $1,889,967 for the 2018 season.

The Chargers picked up Gordon’s fifth-year option this past May worth $5,605,000 for the 2019 season. He’s in line to be an unrestricted free agent in 2020.

In 2019, Gordon appeared in 12 games for the Chargers and rushed for 612 yards on 162 carries (3.8 YPC) to go along with 42 receptions for 296 yards receiving and nine total touchdowns.

We have him included in our Top 100 – 2020 Free Agents list.
