NFC Notes: Buccaneers, Panthers, Saints QB Competition

Buccaneers

  • According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, there’s still a possibility that the Buccaneers could come to an extension agreement with franchise WR Chris Godwin given the organization has “shown willingness” to keep their Super Bowl-winning team intact.
  • However, Fowler notes that Giants’ recently signed WR Kenny Golladay received $18 million annually as a free agent, which means Godwin will command a sizable deal.

Panthers

Panthers DT Derrick Brown admitted he needs to play better in 2021.

“I’ve got to play a lot better,” he said, via Panthers.com. “I’ve got to be more consistent. At everything, every situation.

“I don’t think it’s one thing. It’s a focus. Last year, with everything going as fast as it was through my rookie year, it was trying to juggle everything. Now being able to sit down and focus and learn is the biggest thing.”

Saints

Saints HC Sean Payton said he is confident in both QB Jameis Winston and QB Taysom Hill to replace QB Drew Brees.

โ€œI think both of the players weโ€™re talking about have had the benefit of training, being in meeting rooms with him, and seeing the daily grind. And I think we go from there,โ€ Payton said on NFL Total Access, via Pro Football Talk. โ€œObviously, thereโ€™s a high bar for our team. โ€ฆ And I think both of those guys will rise to the challenge. They both understand the importance of the reps that weโ€™re going to have in this upcoming training camp. And there is a little bit of a standard and itโ€™s kind of high, and so thatโ€™s OK.โ€

Payton added that his experience working with a different quarterback when Brees was hurt over the past two years should help him transition.

โ€œYou think about it and you feel that responsibility to everyone else on the team,โ€ Payton said. โ€œWe feel like weโ€™ve got a real good football team. Both of those guys have done a great job this offseason in what was kind of a little unique offseason, I would say. But yeah, I think thereโ€™s that challenge of winning each year. And especially with our current roster, itโ€™s important you get good, solid play at that position. We know that. Fortunately, weโ€™ve been able to do that in the prior two years when Drewโ€™s been hurt.

โ€œBut replacing someone like Drew and the career heโ€™s had, it really falls on all of us. It falls on the coaches, it falls on the other players. And we look forward to really having a good training camp.โ€

  • Saints DE Cameron Jordan said he doesn’t have a preference on who the team should start at quarterback: “It’s all about who’s going to put us in the best position to win. It’s going to be fun and interesting, but it’s beyond my pay grade.” (Will Selva)
