NFL Notes: Cam Newton, 2020 Season, 2021 Draft

Cam Newton

  • CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora joins a growing number of people who believe former Panthers QB Cam Newton will wait until a starting job opens, likely due to injury around training camp, to sign with a new team.
  • La Canfora says Newton likely just has offers for backup positions at around $7 million, plus incentives, on the table right now because of his murky health situation, so it behooves him to be patient.
  • We have Newton included in our Top 100 Available 2020 Free Agents list.

2020 NFL Season

  • Per Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, if the NFL thinks it has a chance of having fans in the stands, one executive says it would make sense to delay the start of the season as far as November given each team could lose as much as $100 million in revenue without fans: “I don’t think it’s even a question. If you could play a full season with fans, I don’t see how you don’t go that way. The economic impact is too major. If it’s possible to play it with fans by pushing it back, I don’t even see what we’d be discussing.”
  • Breer mentions the start of the 2021 league year is probably the backstop for how far back the NFL would push the Super Bowl.
  • Because that much lost revenue would impact the league’s salary cap, Breer says the league and NFLPA would likely work together to try and smooth the hit over multiple seasons. But that’s something to watch as it relates to the market for players in coming seasons.
