NFL Notes: Draft, College Football Season, Urban Meyer

Draft

  • Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller says some teams have Florida CB C.J. Henderson rated higher than Ohio State CB Jeffrey Okudah
  • Outside of those two, ESPN’s Mel Kiper says there’s zero consensus on the rest of the cornerback class. Kiper mentions Alabama CB Trevon Diggs could see his stock fall to the second or third day of the draft. (Courtney Cronin)
  • Henderson, meanwhile, is starting to pick up more buzz as a potential top-10 selection, along with Georgia OT Andrew Thomas, per Fox Sports’ Peter Schrager
  • Pro Football Network’s Tony Pauline says some teams have moved Florida International QB James Morgan ahead of Georgia QB Jake Fromm on their boards.
  • According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, though, Fromm has been “buzzing” and is a favorite of quarterback coaches around the league.
  • Rapoport adds Utah State QB Jordan Love could hear his name called anywhere between No. 5 to No. 25 in the first round.
  • Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer writes USC OT Austin Jackson seems to have cemented himself as one of the top options in the second tier of offensive tackles.
  • Several teams not only still have Notre Dame WR Chase Claypool as a tight end on their boards, many have him as the No. 1 overall player at the position in a role similar to Raiders TE Darren Waller. (Pauline)
  • Pauline also notes Wisconsin C Tyler Biadasz has been flagged for knee and hip issues and could slide to the third day of the draft.

College Football Season

  • Per Pro Football Talk, ESPN college football broadcaster Chris Fowler tells Sports Business Daily believes the idea of playing the 2020 college football season from February to May in 2021 is “gaining momentum.”
  • Fowlers adds many “reasonable people feel like it might be the most prudent course of action” despite the idea “on the surface might sound preposterous.”
  • There are significant doubts whether the situation with the COVID-19 pandemic would be stable enough to open universities or play games with fans in stadiums in the fall, both of which would likely be necessary to play the season as scheduled.
  • Pushing the 2020 season into the spring of 2021 also has its drawbacks, as it affects the start of the 2021 season and events like the NFL Draft.

Urban Meyer

This past year while former Ohio State HC Urban Meyer was out of football, he made it a point to study the NFL and survey more than 30 of his former players across the league. That, of course, raises the question of if Meyer is eyeing a jump to the NFL coaching ranks.

“Oh, I’m intrigued,” he told Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer. “But I didn’t go that far. There were some conversations, but it never went that far.”
