NFL Rumors: Cardinals Passing On A Quarterback At No. 5?

It’s been widely assumed that the Arizona Cardinals, who hold the No. 5 overall pick, would be targeting a quarterback in this years draft. Over a month ago it was reported that the team owners had visited with Missouri QB Blaine Gabbert which was taken as a strong indication that the Cardinals were considering taking him in the first-round but that may not actually be the case.

ESPN’s Mike Sando, the Arizona Republic’s Kent Somers and AzCardinals.com’s Darren Urban all see Arizona going in a different direction. Even head coach Ken Whisenhunt doesn’t appear to sold on the idea.

“There is nobody that really stands out likeย Sam Bradford did last year. There are a lot of guys that are intriguing athletically likeย Blaine Gabbert, likeย Cam Newton, because of the skill set, some of the things they can do. But I donโ€™t think they have shown the ability to do some of the things that you have seen in the past by some of these guys like aย Matt Ryan or, obviously, like a Sam Bradford,” said Whisenhunt during an interview withย XTRA910 radio in Phoenix.

Draft experts may differ but there remains a good chance that Arizona turn their attention to the defensive side of the ball once they are on the clock next Thursday.
