It has been weeks and the Green Bay Packers still have yet to announced long-term extensions for two of the team’s best players – linebacker Clay Matthews and quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel believes that the team, which very well may have already agreed to deals with the two superstars, were merely waiting until the players were in town next before signing the new papers. The Packers did report Monday for an offseason conditioning program.
Silverstein mentions that the parameters of Matthew’s next contract were believed to have been agreed upon at this year’s NFL Combine.

The Packers have $17.45 million in salary cap space and are just one of two NFL teams this offseason to not sign another team’s unrestricted free agent. Their offseason additions have been few and far between. It’s believed Green Bay is willing to save most of that space for the Matthews and Rodgers deals.
There is a good chance that both deals, when official, could be announced in unison.
It’s also believed that Rodgers’ new deal could make him the highest paid player in the league – a phrase heard many times during this NFL offseason thanks to Joe Flacco’s new deal signed last month.
