Panthers HC Ron Rivera announced on Monday that the team would start QB Kyle Allen against the 49ers this week.
Rivera added that QB Cam Newton would continue his rehab this week and might work to the side in practice.
While it was reported at one point Newton would be able to return by this week, the Panthers Week 1 starter could miss a few more weeks as he continues to recover from a Lisfranc injury.
The Panthers have not discussed who will be the starter when Newton is fully healthy and won’t until it comes up.
Allen has led the team to four straight wins since taking over for Newton and is 5-0 as a starter including last season, which makes this a particularly interesting decision for Carolina.
Allen, 23, signed on with the Panthers as an undrafted free agent back in 2018. Allen was waived coming out of the preseason before the Panthers added him to their practice squad. He was called up to the active roster late in the season.
In 2019, Allen has started four games for the Panthers and completed 65.6 percent of his passes for 901 yards, seven touchdowns and no interceptions.
Weโll have more regarding the Panthers quarterback situation as the news is available.
