Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin Suffers Torn ACL, Out For Season

Update:

The Carolina Panthers have already announced that WR Kelvin Benjamin is out for the season with a torn ACL.

“Obviously, we feel awful for Kelvin,” general manager Dave Gettleman said. “He’s worked tremendously hard to put himself in a positon to have a strong year. We’re confident he will attack his surgery and rehab with the same determination he has met all challenges before.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin has a torn ACL and will miss the 2015 season.

Benjamin had to be carted off the practice field after he went down with a non-contact injury Wednesday. Panthers  HC Ron Rivera told reporters that Benjamin had a “sprained knee,” but reports mentioned that the sense at Panthers’ practice was much less optimistic about the situation.

To make matters worse, Panthers second-round WR Devin Funchess reportedly  injured his hamstring. Although, it sounds like this isn’t a major injury.

There has already been some speculation that veteran WR Reggie Wayne could make sense for the Panthers, but we’ll have to see if they actually have interest in him.

Benjamin, 24, is entering the second year of his four-year, $7.66 million rookie contract that includes $6.19 million guaranteed. He stands to make base salaries of $768,375 (2015), $1,116,750 (2016), and $1 million (2017) over the next three years of the agreement.

In 2014, Benjamin appeared in all 16 games for the Panthers and caught 73 passes for 1,008 yards receiving and nine touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 85 cornerback out of 110 qualifying players.
