Tony Pauline of DraftAnalyst.com mentions that the 49ers decision to sign CB Richard Sherman on Saturday should leave the Raiders in aย good position to sign free agent CB Trumaine Johnson. Pauline adds that the Packers and Cowboys could also be in the mix for Johnson.
Here’s some of the recent buzz regarding Johnson:
- According to Jordan Raanan of ESPN, there was “a lot of talk” about Johnson ending up with the 49ers last week.
- Paulineย previously reported that the 49ers are intent on being players for Johnson and could end up pushing out the Raiders due to the amount of cap space they have available.
- According to Bob McGinn ofย BobMcGinnFootball.com, the Packers are planning to make a “strong run” at signing Johnson this week.
Of the three teams, the Packers have the most cap room right now at around $20.5 million followed by the Raiders at $15.8 million and the Cowboys with just $3.19 million. Dallas would clearly need to make some moves to be in the mix for Johnson, so it could come down to the Raiders, Packers and possibly some other cap-rich teams.
Johnson, 28, is a former third-round pick of the Rams back in 2012. He played out his rookie contractย with the Rams before being franchised in back-to-back seasons.
Johnson is once again in position to be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
In 2017, Johnson appeared in all 16 games for the Rams and recorded 65 tackles, two interceptions with one being returned for a touchdown, a forced fumble, a recovery and 14 pass defenses. Pro Football Focus rated him as the No. 68 overall cornerback out of 120 qualifying players.
