Rams head coach Jeff Fisher mentioned that they chose to sign WR Steve Smith after he put together an “extraordinaryย workout” for them.
“First off, he’s a very first-class young man,” said Fisher, via the St Louis Post-Dispatch. “Overcame a difficult situation with his knee. The guy had an extraordinary workout, and has a chance to get back where he was in 2009.”
Fisher seems to think that he’s capable of returning to his 2009 form when he was able to put together an incredible season that included catchingย 107 passes for 1,220 yards to go with 7 touchdowns for the Giants. Smith underwentย microfracture surgery in 2010 and struggled to do much of anything for the Eagles last season.
Smith is still 26 and considering the Rams limited depth at the receiver position, he was probably one of their best options at that point in time. It’s safe to assume that they’ll be targeting a wide receiver in this year’s draft and possibly at #6 overall.
