โAfter several meetings with Coach Rivera, it was clear he is the right person to bring winning football back to Washington D.C.,โ Redskins owner Dan Snyder said. โHe is widely respected around the league as a man of great integrity and has proven to be one of the finest coaches in the country.โ
According to Michael Silver, the Redskins and Ron Rivera have agreed to a deal to make him the next head coach of the team.
Rivera flew to Washington on Monday and spent the entire day negotiating terms of the new deal. Per Ian Rapoport, Rivera’s deal with the Redskins is for five years.
Rivera could end up having control of personnel as part of this deal, according to reports. Washington also fired GM Bruce Allen on Monday.
Rivera, 57, is a former second-round pick of the Bears back in 1984. He played several seasons in Chicago before taking his first coaching job with the Bears in 1997. He worked for the Eagles and Chargers before the Panthers hired him as their head coach in 2011.
Rivera spent the past nine years as the Panthers head coach and has led them to a record of 76-63-1, which includes four playoff appearances and a trip to the Super Bowl following the 2015 season. He has been named the AP coach of the year twice.
