Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Redskins are working to sign G Brandon Scherff to a long-term extension and ultimately avoid using their franchise tag on him before the upcoming deadline.
League sources told Jenna Laine of ESPN earlier in the week that they expect the Redskins to franchise G Scherff before the upcoming deadline.
However, it appears as though there’s a chance that they could have a long-term agreement in place at some point in the near future.
The franchise tag for offensive linemen is expected to be around $15 million fully guaranteed for the 2020 season.
Redskins HC Ron Rivera told reporters last week that they have had contract talks with Scherff, who is in their plans for 2020, per JP Finlay.
Scherff, 28, is a former No. 5 overall pick by the Redskins out of Iowa in the 2015 NFL Draft. He signed a four-year, $21.215 million fully guaranteed rookie contract and is playing out the fifth-year option on that deal.
The Redskins picked up Scherff’s option in 2018 and paid him $12,525,000 for the 2019 season.
In 2019, Scherff started 11 games for the Redskins before landing on injured reserve. He was rated by Pro Football Focus as the No. 10 guard out of 80 qualifying players.
We have him included in our Top 100 – 2020 Free Agents list.
