Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that Jets GM Mike Maccagnan will likely be back next year and play an important role in hiring the team’s next head coach.
While Maccagnan has made a number of mistakes during his time in New York, Mehta says there’s a belief inside the building that he can improve with a new reporting structure.
According to Mehta, the Jets’ current power structure has created “division, friction and passive-aggressive petulance” between Maccagnan and HC Todd Bowles and their relationship has “eroded” over the years.
It’s worth mentioning that the Jets consulted a search committee who settled on the pairing of Maccagnan and Bowles four years ago.
Mehta writes that the belief within the Jets is that Maccagnan can learn from his missteps, but the team’s brain trust has reportedly lost faith that Bowles will be able to correct his shortcomings.
Sources have told Mehta that Maccagnan and Bowles do not share the same vision or views on players regardless of what they’ve said publicly, and while they’ve both been professional, neither “truly respects the otherโs ability to identify talent and have a plan for success.”
All indications have been that Maccagnan will get the opportunity to hire his own head coach, so this doesn’t come as a big surprise.
The Jets figure to target an offensive-minded head coach this time around who can work to develop QB Sam Darnold and improve what has been a disappointing offense for years.
We’ll have more regarding the Jets as the news is available.
