Saints Release LB Gerald Hodges, Claim OT John Theus

Field Yates of ESPN reports that the Saints have released veteran LB Gerald Hodges and claimed OT John Theus off of waivers from the Panthers on Tuesday.

Hodges, 27, is a former fourth-round pick of the Vikings back in 2013. Minnesota elected to trade Hodges to the 49ers in return for a sixth-round pick and C Nick Easton back in 2015.

Hodges played out the final year of his four-year, $2.58 million rookie contract and signed a one-year deal with the Bills last offseason. Unfortunately, the Bills cut him loose coming out of the preseason and he eventually caught on with the Saints during the season.

In 2017, Hodges appeared in 11 games and recorded three tackles.

Theus, 24, is a former fifth-round pick of the 49ers back in 2016. He signed a four-year, $2.59 million contract with the 49ers and was set to make base salaries of 540,000 and $630,000 over the next two years of the agreement when he was waived last September.

The Panthers later claimed Theus off of waivers from the 49ers before placing him on injured reserve in December.

In 2016, Theus was active for four games.
