According to Ian Rapoport, Seahawks LB Bobby Wagner plans to report to training camp while continuing negotiations on a new contract.
Rapoport says showing up for his teammates was important to Wagner, though he might take it easy on the field until a new deal is done.
Wagner is representing himself and seeking to be the highest-paid inside linebacker in the NFL, topping the $17 million per season the Jets gave LB C.J. Mosley.
Per Over The Cap, Mosley signed a five year, $85 million contract with $43 million fully guaranteed at signing and $51 million in overall guarantees.
If Wagner and the Seahawks can’t come to an agreement, there’s a strong possibility Wagner tests the open market in 2020 if Seattle elects not to franchise tag him for around $15 million.
Wagner, 28, is a former second-round pick by the Seahawks out of Utah State in the 2012 NFL Draft. He is entering the final year of his four-year, $43 million deal and set to earn a base salary of $10.5 million in 2019.
In 2018, Wagner appeared in 15 games for the Seahawks and recorded 138 total tackles, six tackles for loss, one sack, one interception, two forced fumble, one fumble recovery, 11 pass defenses, and scored one defensive touchdown. Pro Football Focus graded him as the No. 1 linebacker out of 92 qualifying players.
We’ll have more on negotiations between Wagner and the Seahawks as the news is available.
