Adam Schefter reports that the Steelers hired former Bengals and Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin as a senior defensive assistant with a focus on the secondary.
Austin, 53, began his NFL coaching career with the Seahawks back in 2003 as their defensive backs coach. He had stints with the Cardinals and Ravens before the Lions hired him as their defensive coordinator back in 2014.
After the Lions made the decision to move on from Austin after hiring Matt Patricia as head coach, he quickly signed on with the Bengals. However, he was fired in November.
The Bengals’ defense ranked No. 32 in yards allowed, No. 31 in points allowed, No. 31 in rushing yards allowed and No. 32 in passing yards allowed at the time Austin was fired.
