Mays, 27, is a former second-round pick of the 49ers back in 2010. He was later traded to the Bengals for an undisclosed draft pick just a year later.
Minnesota signed him to a one-year, $795,000 contract back in March.
According to OverTheCap.com, releasing will free up $770,000 in available cap space while creating $25,000 in dead money.
In 2014, Mays appeared in all 16 games for the Bengals and recorded nine tackles, a sack, and a safety. Pro Football Focus has him down for playing just 61 snaps last year.
