Vikings Waive LB Cameron Smith With Non-Football Injury Designation

The Minnesota Vikings announced Monday that theyโ€™ve waived LB Cameron Smith with a non-football injury designation.

Smith announced Saturday he will miss the 2020 season after undergoing open-heart surgery to fix a bicuspid aortic valve. The condition was discovered after the 2019 fifth-round pick underwent a COVID-19 test.

โ€œAlthough this will unfortunately end my 2020 season, it is really a blessing that we found this as my heart is severely enlarged and wouldnโ€™t have lasted much longer,โ€ Smith wrote.

Ben Goessling says his understanding of the situation is that the Vikings still plan to pay Smith his $675,00 salary for the 2020 season.

Smith, 23, is a former fifth-round pick of the Vikings back in 2019. Heโ€™s currently in the second year of his four-year, $2.8 million contract.

In 2019, Smith appeared in five games for the Vikings and recorded eight tackles and no sacks or interceptions.
