According to Vincent Bonsignore, former Rams DC Wade Phillips would be interested in the Raiders defensive coordinator job in 2021.
The Raiders just fired DC Paul Guenther, but DL coach Rod Marinelli will get the nod for the final three games of the season.
Phillips has a long history at churning out elite defenses as a coordinator, however, and would be a potential upgrade this offseason. There’s a good chance the Raiders will have competition for Phillips, however.
Phillips is one of the most respected defensive minds in the sport but has been out of football this year after being fired by the Rams this past offseason.
Phillips, 73, began his NFL coaching career with the Oilers back in 1976 and has worked for several teams in a number of capacities. He has served as the head coach of the Broncos, Bills and Cowboys before returning to the Broncos as their defensive coordinator in 2015.
Phillips joined the Rams in 2017 and spent three seasons as their defensive coordinator.
In 2019, the Rams’ defense ranked No. 15 in total points allowed, No. 24 in rushing yards allowed, No. 6 in passing yards allowed and No. 12 in total yards allowed.
We’ll have more on Phillips as the news is available.
