Bills Could Consider Moving On From DE Mario Williams Next Year?

Mike Rodak of ESPN writes that the Bills would be wise to consider moving on from DE Mario Williams and his $19.9 million cap figure next year.

Rodak points out that 10 NFL players are scheduled to have larger cap numbers next season with only two of them being non-quarterbacks.

While Williams has been a very productive player over the course of his career, Rodak believes the Bills would be better off using this kind of money on multiple players that can contribute.

Rodak suggests using some of the money to re-sign LT Cordy Glenn, G Richie Incognito, and/or LB Nigel Bradham.

Williams, 30, is in the fourth year of his six-year, $96 million contract that included $50 million guaranteed. He’ll make a base salary of $12.1 million this season to go along with $11.5 million in 2016 and $11.4 million in 2017.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Williams would free up $12.9 million in cap space for the Bills while creating $7 million in dead money.

This season, Williams has appeared in 10 games and recorded 14 tackles and three sacks for the Bills. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 44 defensive end in a 4-3 defense out of 52 qualifying players.

  1. Too much money. Unless he is willing to re-do the contract to more team-friendly terms let him go. They have many other needs that outweigh his production.

  2. His numbers are down, true. Why is the question. The answer is the dumbass coaching him. Rex Ryan is so dumb he used this sack master in coverage early in the season?? Same coach had this team using no pressure a lot early in the season as well. Then this dumbass coach got aggressive for a game. Then back to no pressure. Rex is no genius but is a dumbass. He has made this defense have no identity. It’s no wonder to me why Mario’s numbers are down.
