49ers Had Trade In Place With Saints For NaVorro Bowman Before They Cut Him

Adam Schefter of ESPN, citing league sources, reports that the 49ers and had agreed to a trade with the Saints that would have sent LB NaVorro Bowman to New Orleans for a seventh-round pick.

However, after agreeing to the trade, the 49ers learned that Bowman preferred to a free agent and decide on his own where he’ll play next. This led to the team releasing him outright.

A source tells Schefter that “lots of teams [are] trying to sign” Bowman and will likely take “a few days” for him to make a decision.

Schefter adds that the 49ers also spoke to the Ravens, Browns, and Panthers about a trade.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Raiders Bowman have “mutual interest” and he’s expected to visit with the team in the coming days.

Bowman, 29, is a former third-round pick of the 49ers back in 2010. He was in the second year of his seven-year, $77 million contract that includes $20 million guaranteed and set to make a base salary of $6.75 million for the 2017 season when the 49ers released him.

It’s worth mentioning that Bowman is still working his way back from a season-ending Achilles tear he suffered last year.

In 2017, Bowman has appeared in five games for the 49ers and recorded 38 tackles, no sacks or interceptions and one pass defense. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 63 linebacker out of 86 qualifying players.
