AFC Notes: Blake Bortles, Jaguars, Raiders

Blake Bortles

Jaguars executive vice president Tom Coughlin was asked Wednesday about QB Blake Bortles‘ status with the team.

Blake [Bortles] is the quarterback of the Jacksonville Jaguars right now,” Coughlin told ESPN 690 Jacksonville.

Jaguars

  • Given the Jaguars only have $2.4 million in available cap space, Hays Carlyon of 1010XL expects the team to cut DT Malik Jackson, which saves $11 million in cap space, and QB Blake Bortles to save $9.5 million.
  • Carlyon also views Jaguars RB Carlos Hyde and RT Jeremy Parnell as likely cuts, which would free up $4.75 million and $6 million of cap space respectively.
  • Although Carlyon writes that Jaguars S Teshaun Gipson has a “49 percent” chance of being cut, he believes the team could keep Gipson since HC Doug Marrone views him as a “Pro Bowl” talent.
  • The Jaguars announced that they have hired Dwayne Stukes as a defensive assistant.

Raiders

  • Scott Bair of NBC Sports writes that the Raiders and Oakland Coliseum Authority continue to negotiate a deal to keep playing in Oakland.
  • Although there is “no completed deal” at this point, Bair says the two sides are “getting closer and closer.”
  • Presuming a deal is reached, Michael Gehlken reports that the Raiders would rent the Oakland Coliseum for $7.5 million next season and possess a $10.5 million option for 2020, should the Las Vegas stadium construction incur any delays.
