Another Report That The Patriots Are Willing To Pick Up Darrelle Revis’ $20M Option If Needed

Jason Cole, citing sources close to Darrelle Revis and another source within the Patriots’ organization, reports “there’s a thought that the Patriots might even keep Revis at the $20 million price tag.

According to Cole, the two sides have already tried to work out some perimeters of a long-term agreement. However, the Pats and Revis reportedly haven’t made much progress on an extension.

Cole believes the Patriots could ultimately pick up his option based on much their defense has improved with Revis at cornerback.

This fits with a report from Ian Rapoport who mentioned earlier in the week that two sides were hoping to find a way to bring him back for another season.

According to Rapoport, Revis has been exactly the type of player they thought they were getting when they signed him as a free agent last year.

Sources tell Rapoport, that if the two sides are unable to reach an agreement on a new contract that would keep him in New England for the foreseeable future, the Patriots are not opposed to picking up Revis’ $20 million option for the 2015 season.

Clearly, that wouldn’t be their preference, but they could at least buy themselves some time to work on a long-term contract that comes with a more reasonable salary and cap figure.

Revis, 29, has put together an impressive first year in New England, which could result in another impressive contract for the six-time Pro Bowler.

According to OverTheCap.com, the Patriots will have until the final day of the 2014 league year to exercise his option.

In 2014, Revis recorded 47 tackles, two interceptions, a forced fumble, a recovery and 14 pass defenses over the course of 16 games. Pro Football Focus has Revis rated as the No. 4 cornerback out of 108 qualifying players.
