Broncos Won’t Consider Signing Colin Kaepernick As Backup

Broncos VP John Elway was asked Thursday about the possibility of signing Colin Kaepernick if they feel like they need to add a veteran quarterback.

Colin had his chance here. We offered him a contract. He didn’t take it. So, as I said it in my deposition, I don’t know if I’ll be legally able to say this, but he’s had his chance to be here. He passed it,” Elway said, per James Palmer.

This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, even though the Broncos showed interest in trading for Kaepernick a few years ago.

Elway has said that it’s possible they could consider bringing in a veteran quarterback at some point, depending on how Chad Kelly and Paxton Lynch play over the next few weeks.

Earlier this offseason, the Seahawks had arranged for Kaepernick to work out for them. However, Seattle postponed the trip when the quarterback declined to stop kneeling during the national anthem next season and there hasn’t been any reported interest in him since then.

It’s worth mentioning that Kaepernick has a pending collusion case against the NFL and a number of owners and coaches.

Kaepernick, 30, is a former second-round pick of the 49ers back in 2010. He was in the third year of his seven-year, $126.97 million contract that included $61 million guaranteed when reached an agreement with the 49ers on a restructured deal.

In 2016, Kaepernick has completed 59.2 percent of his passes for 2,241 yards and 16 touchdowns and four interceptions, while adding 468 yards rushing. Pro Football Focus had him rated as the No. 27 quarterback out of 36 qualifying players.
