Browns Reportedly Doing Background Work On Robert Griffin III

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, citing a source with knowledge of the situation, reports that the Browns are making calls to people who know free agent QB Robert Griffin III as a player and his character.

This comes after Cleveland brought RGIII in for a visit in recent days.

Florio mentions that with the 49ers looking for a second-round pick in return for QB Colin Kaepernick and the fact that his contract would run them $12 million in 2016 before they reworked it, RGIII could be a more appealing option with all aspects considered.

Of course, the Browns have the No. 2 overall pick, which they could use on one of this year’s quarterback prospects, so adding either Kaepernick or RGIII isn’t a given.

The Jets, Broncos, 49ers and Rams have also come up as potential options for RGIII, but neither of them have scheduled a visit with the former No. 2 overall pick up to this point.

It’s worth mentioning that signing Griffin to a contract wouldn’t factor into a team’s 2017 compensatory picks.

Griffin, 25, is a former Rookie of the Year and No. 2 overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft. The Redskins traded a huge package of draft picks to get him, but he fell out of favor in Washington, which led to the Redskins using him as their No. 3 quarterback in order to prevent an injury that would guarantee his 2016 salary.

Last May, Washington elected to pick up his fifth-year option worth $16.2 million last year, but they made the obvious move and cut him loose before this salary became guaranteed a few weeks ago.

In 2014, Griffin appeared in nine games and threw for 1,694 yards while completing 68.7 percent of his passes to go along with four touchdowns and six interceptions.

We have him featured in our Best Available Free Agents list.
