Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that the Cardinals intend to sign veteran RB Chris Johnson to a contract following the news that RB David Johnson is out 2-3 months following wrist surgery and will be placed on injured reserve.

Ian Rapoport mentions that it would not be surprising to see the Cardinals re-sign veteran RB Chris Johnson now that David Johnson is expected to be out “several” weeks with a wrist injury.

Re-signing Johnson makes plenty of sense given the circumstance and his recent experience in the team’s offense.

Johnson, 31, is a former first-round pick of the Titans back in 2008. After six years in Tennessee, Johnson signed on with the Jets for the 2014 season but spent just one year in New York before joining the Cardinals the following season.

Arizona elected to bring Johnson back on a one-year, $1.5 million contract last March and returned to the Cardinals on a one-year contract worth $1 million this past July. However, he was among the team’s final roster cuts coming out of the preseason.

In 2016, Johnson rushed for 95 yards on 25 carries (3.8 YPC) and scored one touchdown over the course of four games.
